Careers Unlimited is a unique career fair for high school girls (grades 10, 11, 12) in Regina and surrounding areas. In 2018, BPW Regina celebrated the 40th anniversary of this signature program.
Careers Unlimited provides high school girls with the opportunity to learn about various career fields directly from women who currently work in those fields. The variety of career fields covered is large and varied – from trades to science to arts.
The event begins with a light meal and an opportunity for the students to visit the trade show area. The trade show consists of a number of booths from sponsoring organizations that highlight career, trade and education opportunities for the students to consider.
Following the trade show, the students are assembled for a keynote address – to challenge and inspire them to explore the options that await them. The students then spend two 30 minute sessions meeting with career women. All sessions run simultaneously; the students having chosen in advance which session to attend for the first 30 minutes and which session to attend for the second 30 minutes. During the sessions, the students meet with women from the chosen career field and can speak with them directly to learn the particulars about careers in that field. Discussing educational requirements, salary expectations, working conditions, what it’s like for women working in that field – anything relevant to the career is encouraged.
When the sessions wrap up there is a brief ceremony to conclude the evening. At this ceremony, door prizes are drawn and the bursary prize is awarded. Any attending student in grade 10, 11 or 12 is eligible for the bursary. The bursary is a $500 prize which is payable to an RESP for the winning student.
Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, there is no cost for students to attend this event.
